Welcome to the combined online training for the Child-Initiated Pretend Play Assessment 2 (ChIPPA-2) and the Indigenous Child-Initiated Pretend Play Assessment (I-ChIPPA)!
In this course you can complete your ChIPPA2 and I-ChIPPA training together and halve your supervision commitment.
Both assessments examine a child’s ability to self-initiate and sustain pretend play — the ChIPPA2 as the standardised, norm-referenced measure for children 3 years to 7 years 11 months, and the I-ChIPPA as its culturally responsive counterpart for Australian Aboriginal children aged 4 to 7 years 11 months, developed in consultation with communities and Elders in North West Australia.
Participants complete all modules for both trainings in full — 6 self-study modules for ChIPPA2 and 5 for I-ChIPPA, each with quizzes to check understanding. What changes is supervision: instead of 10 hours per training (20 hours total), you’ll complete 10 hours of combined supervision, scoring and interpreting videos across both assessments in the same small-group Zoom sessions.
How is the training organised?
Participants complete the full module sets for both assessments, then join combined supervision sessions covering both.
Section 1: Self-study modules
ChIPPA2 — 6 Modules (approx. 6 hours 40 minutes total)
Works through the ChIPPA2 Manual plus further information on play themes and the research underpinning the assessment. Each Module ends with a short quiz.
I-ChIPPA — 5 Modules (approx. 3 hours 18 minutes total)
Works through the I-ChIPPA Manual plus further information on the play partner scale and the research underpinning the assessment. Each Module ends with a short quiz.
You’ll need the relevant Manual and Score Sheets on hand as you work through each set of Modules, and some Modules include handouts. Each module quiz requires a minimum score of 80% (5 questions per quiz) before you can progress to the next Module. You’ll have 12 months’ access to the Modules, both to complete them and to refer back to during supervision.
Section 2: 10 hours of combined live Zoom supervision
Instead of 10 hours per assessment (20 hours total), you’ll complete 10 hours of combined supervision, scoring and interpreting videos across both the ChIPPA2 and I-ChIPPA in the same small-group sessions (maximum 5 participants plus the trainer). Sessions run in 1–2 hour blocks, scheduled around group availability, time zones, and trainer availability, with one video scored and interpreted per session.
You’ll be invited to share at least one video of yourself administering each assessment. If this isn’t possible in your workplace, you can discuss the assessment in depth instead — or, for ChIPPA2, a video will be provided for you. Videos are shared live via your own screen share during the session; Learn to Play and the trainer do not receive or store a copy, and no other participant retains a copy. A parent consent form is available for download at the end of the supervision section.
On completion, you’ll receive a certificate confirming training in the administration, scoring and interpretation of both the ChIPPA2 and the I-ChIPPA.
Do I need to have a ChIPPA2 Kit?
Yes — for this combined training you’ll need both the ChIPPA-2 Kit and the I-ChIPPA Kit.
- If you have the original ChIPPA Kit (pre-2019), you’ll need to purchase the ChIPPA-2 Manual and updated ChIPPA-2 Scoring Booklets (for 3-year-olds, and for 4–7-year-olds), published in late 2019. These are included in the ChIPPA-2 Kit.
- If you already have a ChIPPA-2 Kit, you only need to add the I-ChIPPA Supplement, rather than the full I-ChIPPA Kit.
- If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need the ChIPPA-2 Kit and I-ChIPPA Supplement, rather than the full kit.

Self Study Course
There are a total of 11 Modules in the course. You work through this content at your own pace, in your own time. You will require the ChIPPA-2 manual and score sheets, as well as the I-ChIPPA manual and score sheets, with you as you work through the Modules. For some Modules there are handouts provided on the presentations. Where handouts are provided, the information in the presentations goes beyond the manual content.
You will have 12 months access to the Modules, both to work through them, and refer back to them during the supervision sessions. The total time of the recordings is approximately 10 hours.
