Welcome to online training for the Child-Initiated Pretend Play Assessment 2 (ChIPPA2). To complete this training you will need a ChIPPA2 Kit. If you have the original ChIPPA Kit this is also okay as the play materials have not changed. However, you will need to purchase the ChIPPA2 manual and updated ChIPPA2 scoring booklets for 3-year-old children and ChIPPA2 scoring booklets for 4 – 7-year-old children, which were published in late 2019. The ChIPPA2 manual and updated ChIPPA2 scoring booklets are included in the ChIPPA2 Kit.

The ChIPPA2 Kit can be purchased on the Learn to Play website, further information here.

The ChIPPA2 is a norm referenced standardised assessment of the quality of a child’s ability to spontaneously self-initiate their own play, which means a child’s raw scores on the ChIPPA2 can be compared to standard scores, which provides information on where a child’s ability to play sits beside other children their age, and for some age groups, gender. This assessment is for children aged 3 years to 7 years 11 months. From a ChIPPA2 assessment the process of a child’s ability to play can be observed, the standard scores provide information on how the child’s play ability compares to peers, play styles can be identified, and in many cases, the social-emotional state of the child can be hypothesised through play themes. The ChIPPA2 is suitable as an assessment when there are concerns about a child’s: ability to play, social competence, language, narrative language, self-regulation, and ability to engage in learning.

The ChIPPA2 Kit includes all play materials, ChIPPA2 manual and 2 sets of ChIPPA2 scoring booklets. One scoring booklet is coloured light green and is the scoring booklet for 3-year-old children. The beige coloured scoring booklet is for 4 – 7-year-old children. The ChIPPA2 scoring booklets have different content, particularly the Clinical Observations Form.  The year 2021 marks 30 years that have been devoted to developing the ChIPPA2 and the research underpinning this assessment for reliability, validity, and as an outcome measure.

This training has 2 sections:

    1. 6 Modules for self-study. These Modules take you through the ChIPPA2 manual as well as adding more information on play themes and research underpinning the ChIPPA2. After each Module there is a short quiz to complete. Participants are required to attain a minimum score of 80% in each quiz. Once 80% or more is accomplished the participant can proceed to the next Module.

    1. 10 hours of supervision sessions over Zoom (1-2 hours per session) in small groups of no more than 5 other people, plus the trainer, to score and interpret videos of ChIPPA2 assessments. You will be invited to share at least one video of yourself administering a ChIPPA2. All people in the group will be involved in scoring and interpreting at least 5 ChIPPA2 assessments. (If your are unable to provide videos for privacy or workplace reasons, you are still able to do the training and videos will be provided for you.)

Self Study Course

There are 6 Modules in the course. You work through this content at your own pace, in your own time. The Modules take you through the manual as well as providing further information on research underpinning the ChIPPA2. You will require the ChIPPA2 manual with you as you work through the Modules. For some Modules there are handouts provided on the presentations. Where handouts are provided, the information in the presentations goes beyond the manual content. For Modules 3 and 4 it would be helpful to have the ChIPPA2 scoring booklets to refer to.

You will have 10 months access to the Modules, both to work through them, and refer back to them during the supervision sessions. The total time of the recordings is approximately 6 hours 40 minutes.
