About

Play in the classroom is controversial as the link between a child’s play ability and education is not always immediately clear. This workshop combines the expertise of Karen Stagnitti (play) with Louise Paatsch (language, literacy, education and digital play) to bring to teachers and therapists ideas and explanations of why and how to embed play in the classroom. This workshop will cover why play is relevant to learning and the classroom, how to assess and report on play using the Pretend Play Checklist for Teachers, how to link play ability to language and literacy, and how to embed play, including digital play, in the classroom to extend children’s learning.

Participants will be taken through the Pretend Play Checklist for Teachers (PPC-T) as a criterion-referenced assessment for how to assess and report on a child’s play ability. PPC-T Manual and Pack of Assessment Scoring Forms are included in the cost of the workshop and will be sent out to all registrants before the workshop. The 2024 Routledge book by Louise Paatsch and Karen Stagnitti with Dr Siobhan Casey and Amity Green called “Learning through play in the primary school. The why and how for teachers and school leaders” is also included in the cost of the workshop and will posted to all registrants before the workshop.

This training will be supported by case studies. The workshop will also incorporate research carried out in mainstream schools where play programs have been carried out or embedded. A separate handout is provided on research into play in specialist/SDS schools.

This one-day workshop is a very practical and hands-on workshop with examples linking play abilities to the Australian curriculum. This workshop would be valuable to professionals who work in schools and are interested in play, language and literacy.

This online workshop will comprise:
  • The workshop content will cover the Pretend Play Checklist for Teachers with case study discussion through break-out rooms on Zoom
  • Why guided play supports thinking and learning
  • Practical aspects of planning for play in the classroom
    • the role of the teachers
    • linking play to the curriculum.
  • This workshop will focus on practical applications for the interactive session using break-out rooms, chatbox, and discussion.

Included Resource

The Pretend Play Developmental Checklist for Teachers (PPC-T) is a non-standardised criterion-referenced assessment of a child’s ability to play. It provides a framework for teachers to observe the pretend play of children. It is an assessment that will assist teachers to understand what pretend play looks like, what the stages of development are, how to understand a child’s play, and how to report on a child’s developing pretend play ability.

To score the PPC-T, an Assessment Scoring Form is used to record the child’s spontaneous play abilities, emerging play abilities, and also to record if play skills were not observed.

Learning Through Play in the Primary School:
The Why and the How for Teachers and School Leaders

By Louise Paatsch, Siobhan Casey, Amity Green, Karen Stagnitti

Drawing on research to inform practice, this book is written for teachers and school leaders looking for guidance on how to successfully implement a play-based curriculum in the early years of primary school. The book is divided into two sections, the first drawing on the latest research to outline the importance of play in a child’s development and emotional engagement in learning. The second section provides practical support and examples for how to embed play in a school curriculum to enhance young children’s learning. The practical section covers setting up an environment for guided play, demonstrating how to assess learning from play-based activities and how to report on outcomes, supported by checklists, vignettes, and case studies.
